As part of a pre-ASCA field trip to SW AR tomorrow, Michael Linz and I scouted First Old River an oxbow lake in Miller County a bit less than 20 miles east of Texarkana. It took less than a minute to pick out the first of 5 or 6 Cave Swallows. I have to hedge a bit because one of the birds, a younger juvenile, didn't give me a long enough or a satisfactory enough look to eliminate a young Cliff Swallow. Most of the swallows gathered on the wires were Northern Rough-winged but also present were a few Tree, Barn and single Bank and Cliff.
First Old River was the site where, in late June, the steady string of Cave Swallow reports began for me. Michael Linz obtained photographs.
