Last weekend we were at the Arkansas Audubon Adult Workshops at Ferncliff near Little Rock. On Sunday afternoon a few "students" stayed for a walk along the stream. At a boggy place along the trail someone spotted a Phantom Crane Fly, Bittacomorpha sp.. They fly holding their legs fanned out like this one in the picture, displaying their fancy leggings. The black and white on their legs causes them to appear and disappear as they pass in front of foliage....hence the "phantom" perhaps. Cheryl and Norman Attachments:
