As the summer draws to a close, so does our first annual calendar photo contest season. We had a great turn out this year; better than we had expected in the contest’s first year. Thanks to everyone who entered and supported this competition and the Iola Rey Fund, which primarily helps young people connect with the Arkansas Audubon Society, a cause vital to the organization’s future.
The calendar committee is very excited about this year’s calendar because it showcases species that are both beautiful and representative of the diverse birding Arkansas offers. We are pleased to announce this year’s grand-prize winner, David Oakley of Fayetteville. His photo of a LeConte’s Sparrow will be featured on the 2014 Calendar’s front cover (see photo below). Congratulations, David, on this accomplishment! However, Mr. Oakley’s photo just scratches the surface of all the beauties that adorn the inside of this year’s calendar.
Our other 2014 winners include: Bill Barksdale, Don Simons, Gail Miller, Doc George, Kenny Nations, Mike Martin, Vic Prislipsky, Michael Linz and Edie Calaway.
The 2014 Arkansas Audubon Society calendars will be available for purchase September 27-29 at the fall meeting in Harrison. They will be spiral bound, 8.5”x 11”, and printed on heavy 80 lb. gloss paper. The calendars will also include an extra page in the back containing important birding dates throughout the year, a bit of AAS history and more. This page will also feature photos taken by Shelby Tripcony, a young birder from central Arkansas.
If you cannot attend the fall meeting, contact Mitchell Pruitt (mlpruitt24 AT yahoo.com) to get your name on a list for any calendars that may be left over. This list will be based on a first-come, first-served basis, as there are a limited number of calendars.
The calendars are $20 each, and all funds raised from their sale will go to the Iola Rey Scholarship Fund.
Thanks again from the calendar photo committee,
