In going through today's Cave Swallow images, I found another one that's instructive. It shows 2 Cliff Swallows and the Cave Swallow in a better profile position that illustrates how much the "capped" appearance of the juvenile Cave Swallow is accentuated by the overall paleness of its throat, face and nape. Notice also that the dark "cap" of the Cave Swallow reaches the top of the eye but does not extend behind or encompass it as in the case of the 2 Cliff Swallows. I don't think this is necessarily true for Caves Swallows of all ages and plumage variation. However, it has held true for all of the juvenile Cave Swallows that I've seen over the years.
