Kenny and LaDonna Nichols drove down to Miller County today to look for the juvenile Cave Swallow that I photographed this past Sunday morning at First Old River, an oxbox lake in eastern Miller County. Once at First Old River, it didn't take us long to find not only 1 but a total of 6 Cave Swallows (2 adults and 4 juveniles). Although the Cave's could be post-breeding wanderers from colonies in northeast Texas, I believe that, given the fact that both records and count of individuals have been increasing over the past 2-3 years, that a breeding colony is present somewhere close by. I'll be out again in the next few days searching for any active remaining nests. If I'm successful, another species will be added to the list of those known to breed in the state.
