There are currently 12 American Avocets and 6 Black-bellied Plovers on the east pond near the grain bins. All are in breeding plumage and looking sharp.

Had several interesting bird sightings at BKNWR, today (June 15). Most unusual were a pair (male & female) of American Avocets. They were feeding in a rice field just north of the grain bins. By the way they were acting, I wouldn't be surprised if they nested here.
Just west of the grain bins, in one of the flooded impoundments were 5 Least Terns, numerous Black-necked Stilts, 96 White Pelicans, and 12 species of duck. They were: Mallard (several), N. Shoveler (several), Gadwall (several), Am. Wigeon (2), Greater Scaup (4! & all in female plumage), Lesser Scaup, Ruddy Duck (pair), Green-winged Teal, Wood Duck, Blue-winged Teal (several including at least two females), Ring-necked Duck and Pintail (4). I saw a Redhead here just a couple days ago so he may still be around. We also had a Canvasback at Treadways this morning. Lots of summering ducks hanging around.

Stopped by BKNWR briefly yesterday afternoon. In one of the ponds, just west of the grain bins were 100+ pelicans. 20+ Black-necked Stilts, and a single American Avocet. There were a pair here in mid-June. I wondered then if they might try to nest.

Looked for but did not see the reported Reeve, today. There were, however, 2 American Avocets still hanging around. We first saw them in mid-June, again in mid-July and today. I was hoping they'd nest. Also seen were: 50+ Black-necked Stilts, 2 Greater Yellowlegs, 8 Lesser Yellowlegs, 4 Pectoral Sandpipers, 1 Semipalmated Plover, 6 Least Sandpipers, several Spotted Sandpipers, 6 Stilt Sandpipers, and 4 dowitchers (probably Long-billed).

LaDonna and I counted shorebirds at BKNWR this afternoon. Maybe a thousand shorebirds in all. Most notable were a Willet and an American Avocet.
Good birding!
