Below are the upcoming field trips sponsored by the Audubon Society of Central
Arkansas (ASCA). All levels of birds are welcome and you don't have to be an
ASCA member to participate. Please feel free to contact me off list if you have
questions or need additional information.

Little Rock, AR
June 8
Mt. Magazine State Park
Havana, AR
Join members of ASCA and State Park Interpreter Don Simons for a “Bird and
Butterfly Ramble” on top of Mt. Magazine to enjoy birds, butterflies, and
wildflowers. Rufous-crowned Sparrows, warblers, buntings, tanagers,
swallowtails, fritillaries, and others are likely to be found. Arkansas’s
premier butterfly expert and author Lori Spencer is assisting the group late in
the morning.
Those in the Little Rock area, meet at 7:00 a.m. at the west Little Rock Wal
Mart parking lot (northwest corner) on Hwy. 10. We’ll caravan Hwy. 10 to
Havana, then take Hwy. 309 up the mountain. We should arrive at the Visitor
Center around 9:00 a.m. for anyone who would like to meet us there. We’ll walk
some unpaved trails, so wear sturdy shoes. Bring water, snacks, and lunch, or
eat in the Lodge restaurant. We’ll get back to Little Rock mid-afternoon. Go

Arkansas Post National Memorial
Located south of Gillett, AR
Meet at 6:30 a.m. at the Dixon Rd. commuter lot, Exit 3 west off I-530 South.
The commuter lot is south of Little Rock heading towards Pine Bluff. We’ll
arrive around 8:45 a.m. at the NPS Visitor Center for those who want to meet us
there. Bring water and lunch. Target birds are Purple and Common Gallinules
(and their babies), Least Bittern, Bald Eagle, and summer songbirds. Alligators
are also possible! Located at the northern edge of the Gulf coastal plain,
Arkansas Post's native growth ranges from prairie grasses and lowland hardwood
forests to wetland marshes near the bayous and river. John James Audubon
described, painted, and named the Traill's Flycatcher while at Arkansas Post in
the spring of 1822. For a checklist of the park’s birds, go to

Directions:From the Dixon Rd. commuter lot, continue south on I-530 to Pine
Bluff. When I-530 ends, exit to Hwy. 65. Follow Hwy. 65 to Gould and turn left
onto Hwy. 212. When Hwy. 212 ends, turn left (north) onto Hwy. 165 heading
towards Gillett, and cross over the Arkansas River. Continue on Hwy. 165 for
five miles, then turn right on Hwy. 169. Follow it two miles into the park.
August 17
Bald Knob National Wildlife Refuge
Bald Knob, AR
Meet at 7:00 a.m. in North Little Rock at the Other Center parking lot on the
east side of the lot behind McDonald’s. The Other Center is located across from
McCain Mall, on McCain Blvd. Take Exit 1 West, off Hwy. 67/167. We’ll arrive
at Bald Knob NWR at around 8:30 a.m. for those who want to meet us there. The
federal refuge is also a National Audubon Important Bird Area (IBA). We expect
shorebirds, herons, egrets, night-herons, and possibly Wood Storks and Roseate
Spoonbills. It will be very hot so bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen,
and a hat. If you own a scope, bring it. Very little walking will be
involved. There is no bathroom on-site. There is a McDonald’s just off Hwy.
67/167 at the Bald Knob exit. This is a morning trip. Go to
www.fws.gov/baldknob/for more information about the refuge.
